The launch party is (back) ON and set for FRIDAY, MARCH 3RD* at the PADDOCK TAVERN* in Toronto (178 Bathurst Street, SW corner of Queen and Bathurst). Kick-off time is 9pm!

For the first time I’ll be doing a full set with FULL BAND to celebrate the release of my album, ARSENAL, which I’ve been prattling about during its creation over the last 12-18 months. (By the way, that album is now available for pre-order on iTunes as well as bandcamp.)

Local solo punk icon T.C. Folkpunk will be opening the night, followed by a set by Terrible And The Horribles, who will proceed to then back me up for my own set of in-your-face tunes from my album. I’m hoping that the oh-so-versatile Myke Mazzei will join us onstage during my set, for at least a few tunes. He’s a way better soloist than I am and such a sweet harmonist among other talents (such as producing the album being played/celebrated). β™₯

Stick around after my set to indulge in the sweet dance/punk sounds of local DJ DKTO, and mingle with some beautiful people.

*(This concert had been previously announced for the day after at Touche, who have temporarily closed while undergoing renovation. I remain on excellent terms with them and do hope to set up a full concert there as well, later in the year. Much love to Rich, Jay, Gunilla, Roberto and crew.)

This has been a long time coming. Save the date and see you at The Paddock on Mar. 3!

The album launch for ARSENAL is set for March 2017 t a location soon-to-be-annnounced in downtown Toronto!

I will be playing with a full band (a full-gig first for me) to really showcase the album–namely, local punks Terrible & The Horribles, who I shared a stage with in September and who boast a heavy, full-throttle sound. Local solopunk troubadour T.C. Folkpunk will kick things off with a blistering set of his own.

Location to be announced! Watch this space.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and social media re-posts of my new Asian Driver lyric video. In particular, the Facebook post of the video is closing in on 2,400 (!) people reached in just over four days–without any paid boosts (as of yet). For a non-Beyonce-level obscure punk like me, that’s a f*ckload of a lot. Keep β€˜em coming, because I’m really proud of this single, and of the album to follow. It’s nice to be heard.

Also, in case any commitment-phobes out there were wondering, you are indeed able to buy the new “Asian Driver” single without pre-ordering the album. Just follow this link:

But never mind that. You want more. I know you do. πŸ˜‰ And all you have to to get it, is to check below. :p

Hey everyone, I hope you are all having a wonderful holiday season.

On December 25th, I decided to do a completely impromptu, mostly unplanned 3-song concert of holiday-themed songs (2 originals + 1 classic “holiday” song), streamed live on Facebook.

If you missed it, here it is to enjoy on replay!

I hope to have more details soon re: an album launch party for 2017.

The Holidays Beckon. And then….

Hello all,

It’s been awhile since I’ve had an update of any substance. When I haven’t been working out like mad and posting semi-douchey selfies on Instagram, I’ve been getting the album closer to release-ready.

I am now plotting to have this Arsenal out by the first week of March. Martin Bowes of the renowned UK-based Cage Studios has lovingly mastered the tracks to perfection — a job which was made possible by my fledgling GoFundMe campaign. Speaking of which, my crowdfunding campaign IS still a thing, so please feel free to donate. $10 gets you an automatic pre-order of the album, and there’s more in store if you donate more!

In addition to mastering, I’m still looking to reimburse costs for manufacturing, a proper launch gig, and generally publicizing this thing past my personal echo chamber. If I do say so myself, the world could use this Arsenal of lyrics and chords, particularly at this rather uncertain juncture in world history.

In any case, here are a few things to look forward to:

– I’m appearing at Fine Productions‘ Holiday Jam on Dec. 9th.

– I’m gonna get off my ass and book more acoustic shows in the lead-up to the album.

– Lyric video for the first single will appear in January, with a “full video” hopefully to come soon after.

– The album — and accompanying launch gig (somewhere in Toronto, TBA) — will finally arrive in March.

See you guys very soon! Love to you all,

– RexySpice πŸ˜‰

“A Lover Sings” cover / GoFundMe reminder

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my GoFundMe. The funds will help me build up a proper release for my Arsenal album in 2017! If you haven’t donated yet, it’s never too late. All donations are greatly appreciated!

And while you’re at it, check out this home video I did for kicks earlier today. I love Billy Bragg and owe him a lot, inspirationally. And lately, this particular song has been stuck on repeat on my iPod… so I thought, why not?

Take good care and spread the word about my Arsenal!! πŸ™‚

Fund My Arsenal!

I’m just coming off of a weekend of revelry, reckoning, and celebration–and today is my actual birthday.

So, I would really appreciate your support with the release of this upcoming album I’ve been yammering on about all year. There are a few hurdles to overcome before we’re at the finish line, and this album is the culmination of years of living, loving, learning, blood, sweat, tears, angst… the reason I was put here. If I were Beyonce or Drake I’d just throw it online already, but I’m not. And I don’t aspire to that level necessarily, but I do feel that my songs deserve to be heard beyond my inner periphery.

$10 gets you a digital pre-order. There’s much more in store, if you donate more! πŸ˜€

This year, help make my birthday wish come true. Much love to you all. <3 -rexy PS feel free to SHARE this campaign as well!

about last night

After years of sticking out like a hilariously sore, vulgar thumb in the singer/songwriter underground, it was an honour, pleasure, and (after a week like this one, frankly) a relief to finally play my first bonafide punk night. I feel energized and anticipative, and look forward to more. Much love and thanks to Terrible And The Horribles for graciously offering me their closing spot, the staff at Let’s Be Frank for the friendly ambience and excellent service, and Caustic Lime for setting EXACTLY the right tone for kick off–no granola-flavoured confessional was this! πŸ‘Š I hope to work with ALL of you again in the very near future. And finally to all the friends who showed up, stopped in, and stuck around–either for a bit or for the whole night. Once again, you all remind me of what a blessing it is to have so many great friends who come through for you at a time when you really need it–even in the midst of screaming and thrashing. πŸ˜‰

Love to you all, and see you again soon! ❀️

Save The Date: Sept 15th

Hello all,

I’m happy to announce that I will be performing at Let’s Be Frank on Sept. 15th, closing a night of punk revelry that will also feature Caustic Lime and my good friends in Terrible & The Horribles. Save the date. It’s my first gig since March, breaking an unintended six-month performance hiatus. I’m especially super excited to be sharing the bill with some killer punk rockers! No better way to usher in the coming change of season. πŸ˜‰

Offstage, I’ve been preparing to get mixes for the upcoming record mastered, and I’m aiming for a winter release. I MAY release a teaser-single or two online in the lead-up to that–which MAY or may not make the actual record itself. Suffice to say if you’ve ever assembled a playlist or made a mixtape/CD, the science of sequencing is a lot more complicated than it seems at a glance!

Patience, and see you on Sept. 15th. πŸ˜‰

On Black Lives Matter, Activism, Sex, and the meaning of “Pride”

(I originally posted this on my personal facebook, and decided to reproduce it here. I think these are important things to discuss, and I want to add to the wider conversation. This also goes well with my last post about feeling initial reticence to keeping certain elements of my upcoming album intact in the wake of Orlando. And this only strengthens my resolve: F*ck it. There ARE divisions within the LGBTQ2SA community, we need to address them, and this is NOT the time to soften blows!) πŸ˜‰

Ok, so I have been processing the whole β€ͺ#β€ŽBLMTOPride‬ thing. I had an initial reaction in the immediate moment which, after further reflection and perspective, I will admit came mostly from a selfish place (calling myself out here). Ultimately I AM onside with how things went down and I’m sorry I ever felt differently. Yeah, I ended up being stuck at the starting gate with the other bannered groups for over an hour (the stop did cause a cascade effect, time-consumption-wise, with the remainder of the parade). No matter, that. Activism isn’t supposed to be convenient. It’s supposed to provoke, enrage, challenge the establishment, inspire conversation–check, check, check. It is naive and misinformed to think that Black Lives Matter were attacking LGBTQ2SA culture–on the contrary, their demonstration was a continuation (and a REMINDER) of the inherently activist nature that queer culture’s roots are based upon. To me, the corporate sponsorship that now defines the event isn’t a sign of “how far we’ve come,” but rather how diluted our focus has become. Just like abolishing slavery didn’t end systematic racism, marriage equality hasn’t killed institutional homophobia. Ultimately, for me personally, this feels like a cautionary tale in getting too comfy with comfort, if you will. Add that to the week full of lessons learned–fine, I’ll take it. πŸ˜‰

I DO want to confront one perspective that I thankfully haven’t seen much of online, BUT which was the basis of a heated in-person (imagine THAT!) debate I found myself in on Sunday: in my humble opinion, raw, uncensored SEXUALITY is (still) political (TOO). I’m all for calling out the corporatization of Pride, but please don’t lump that in with groups likeTNT!MENN and such. TD Bank may be aiming for nothing more than an increase in new chequing accounts with their conventionally “hot” (and likely NOT queer) models for hire, but the REAL queers getting down and dirty IN YOUR FACE (mainstream body shape acceptability be damned) at the festival are NOT part of the de-politicization of Pride–in fact, they (WE) have been one of the few REAL political highlights of the whole thing for YEARS! You want to “protect the children”? Go ahead and explain LIFE to them, like you’re SUPPOSED to–kids are always, always WAY more sophisticated than we think they are. (Don’t YOU remember being a kid?) This is NOT about “sex vs politics”–SEX *IS* POLITICAL, and indeed THAT is one of the core values of the political heritage defining Pride! πŸ‘ We aren’t all just happy gay people aiming for the homo version of the perfect spouse with 2.5 kids and a white picket fence (mortgaged with TD, obviously)–a chunk of us have NO INTEREST in that, and our life choices are JUST as valid! And we are all sexual beings of ALL kinds of identities and persuasions, and we’re NOT going to modify ourselves for ANYONE’s comfort!

Finally, if you find yourself agreeing with Margaret Wente about ANYTHING, you really need to examine just how progressive your personal politics really are. JUST SAYIN! β€ͺ#β€ŽPEACE‬ 😼
